Risk managers are sexy

In an article from the December 7, 2009 edition of Canadian Business, Sylvia MacArthur, president of Madison MacArthur, an executive search firm in Toronto, writes about risk management: “It’s not necessarily seen as the sexiest business to get into”.

As a risk professional, I have to take offense.

Ms. MacArthur, risk management is a super sexy profession and so are risk managers. You want sexy? Just sit down during a break out session with risk managers and hear the passion in their voices as they talk about VaR models and Monte Carlo simulations. (Gosh, just writing about it is getting me sweaty.)

And this one time, at risk camp, I was in a risk map workshop with these other risk managers from Dubai, Zürich and Madrid, and you should have seen how vibrant the greens, ambers and reds were on their matrices – especially the reds which were an ultra sexy hue. This is a PG blog so I cannot even describe how sexy it is when a risk manager starts walking people through a PowerPoint presentation about the Greeks. You want sexy? Talking about gamma and theta; now that is sexy times.

So, on behalf of all risk professionals everywhere let me say that not only is risk management sexy, but (arguably) so are all the risk managers. :P
